Chevrolet’s next muscle truck could not have been more different. The SS was basically a re-engined and tweaked version of a commercial vehicle. The Syclone, introduced the year after, may have resembled the S15, on which it was based, but under the skin it was very special indeed. It was, in the words of authors Patrick Paternie and Dan Lyons, ‘trying to be a Porsche 959 with a cargo bed’. The 262-cu in (4.3-litre) vortec V6 could be found under the bonnets of workaday GMC pick-ups, but this one was equipped with a turbocharger, intercooler and electronic multi-port fuel injection. That meant 280hp (209kW) at 4,400rpm and 350lb ft (474.6Nm) at 3,600rpm. GM’s four-speed automatic from the Corvette was recalibrated to suit, and there was full-time four-wheel-drive. One problem with high powered two-wheel-drive pick-ups is that their lightly laden rear ends are prone to wheel spin and axle tramp, but this was not the case with this machine. There was ABS as well, with 16 x 8in wheels with 245/50 VR16 performance tyres. Like the 454SS, the Syclone came in black only, with a suitably sporty interior. The result was 4.9 seconds to 60mph (96.5km/h), according to Motor Trend, with a 13.6-second quarter-mile. Top speed was limited to 126mph (203km/h), and the load capacity was a mere 500lb (227kg). At over $25,000, the Suclone proved that all this technology did not come cheap, but like the SS, it helped to kickstart the concept of a performance pick-up, direct from the factory.
